Prof Rafael Grohmann visits DeepLab to discuss collaboration

16 October 2023

Rafael Grohmann, Assistant Professor of Media Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, visited DeepLab on 12 and 13 October 2023, offering invaluable insights on digital labor in Brazil.

Prof Grohmann’s research focuses on critical platform and digital labour that intersects with DeepLab’s area of study, and we benefited from his expertise in the given field. On Day 1, Dr Grohmann interacted individually with our PhD students, discussing their proposals and advising them on ways to understand and analyse platform labour during their upcoming ethnographic fieldwork. On Day 2, Prof Grohmann delivered a talk on his current research, enlightening us about the different categories of gig work in Brazil and how they interact with and add on to precarity and misinformation on the digital platforms. From AI Trainers who have access to English as well as software knowledge to Click Farm Workers who help aspiring influencers or entrepreneurs reach a greater target audience – the world of digital labour in Brazil is highly individualistic and competitive, and Prof Grohmann’s erudite insight was a valuable addition to our lab’s research.

The DeepLab team sincerely thanks Prof Rafael Grohmann for his colourful and scholarly engagement with us.
