The School of Social Science offered a welcome lunch followed by the guest's lecture on 24 April.

30 April 2023

Prof. Pinheiro-Machado was warmly welcomed by the University’s School of Social Sciences through a knowledge and experience sharing lunch that explored common interests and the prospects of future collaborations.

The lunch was  attended by Prof. Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu, Dr. rer. soc., Dean of the School of Social Sciences and DeepLab advisory board member, Dr. Jose Jowel Canuday, DPhil. (Oxon.), Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Dr. Carmel Abao, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Political Science, Dr. Raul Pertierra, Mr. Miguel Rivera, Director, Ateneo Martial Law Museum (now DeepLab Ph.D. student), and Mr. Aaron Vicencio, Director of the Eugenio Lopez Jr. Center for Multimedia Communication.

After the lunch, Prof. Pinheiro-Machado gave a lecture to Political Science, Diplomacy, and International Relations students. The thought-provoking lecture,  entitled “The Political Implications of the Digital Economy in Brazil”, challenged the students and instigated an engaging discussion with Prof. Pinheiro-Machado about the surprising parallels between the realities of Philippine and Brazilian politics and its relationship with the digital economy.

Prof. Pinheiro-Machado’s visit to Manila was capped by a personal tour of the City of Manila, particularly the district of Quiapo. The tour, given by Mr. Gino Trinidad, Instructor at the Department of Political Science, began at the famous Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene and Plaza Miranda, snaking through the cramped street markets of Quiapo, and ended with a sumptuous snack at the Filipino-Chinese Binondo District. Sites such as the noisy street markets of Quiapo and the busy pedestrian thoroughfares, and their intersections with the digital economy and authoritarian politics are integral to the research currently being done at DeepLab. We look forward to future visits to the Philippines by the DeepLab team!
