On 15 May 2023, we celebrated the launch of the UCD Digital Economy and Extreme Politics Lab (DeepLab). Gracing the event were Professor Orla Freely, President of University College Dublin, Professor Colin Scott, Vice President for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion and Principal of the UCD College of Social Sciences and Law, and staff and students of the School and Geography, along with many other collaborators, supporters, and friends of the lab, such as renowned anthropologist Professor Daniel Miller from University College London. Our Lab Director, Professor Rosana Pinheiro-Machado, welcomed all the guests and shared her plans and ambitions for the ERC-funded WorkPoliticsBIP project and the Deeplab. A local Brazilian band ended the evening on a fun-filled note and gave our diverse guests a taste of Brazil, where Prof. Pinheiro-Machado first conceived our research ideas. Our lab began its journey amidst music, food, and promises for path-breaking research. During the event’s week, Prof. Miller and Dr Chico Camargo (University of Exeter) also generously discussed ethnographic methods, computer science, and collaborative research projects with our Ph.D. students. We look forward to making this journey meaningful through collaborations with academics and practitioners and impactful publications.
