05 February 2026
Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Cristiano Rodrigues visited DeepLab as part of the Abdias Nascimento Program on 05 February 2026.
During his visit, Professor Rodrigues delivered the talk “Gender, Race, and Sexual Politics under the Rise of the Far Right in Brazil”, in which he examined how the rise of far right conservatism in Brazil has reshaped public policies on gender, racial equality, and LGBTQIA+ rights. The lecture offered a critical account of the mechanisms through which these agendas have been reconfigured, emphasizing processes of omission, arena shifting, symbolic backlash, and active dismantling as central strategies in the erosion of such policies under conditions of democratic backsliding, as well as the role played by social movements resistance during this period.
In addition to the lecture, Professor Rodrigues took part in a lunch with Abdias do Nascimento fellows, creating a space for dialogue and exchange. The meeting was marked by rich discussions on contemporary political challenges, research agendas, and methodological approaches, and was considered highly fruitful by the participants, further strengthening academic collaboration and intellectual exchange within the program.
The DeepLab team is profoundly grateful to Professor Cristiano Rodrigues for his visit and for sharing his research and insights, which greatly contributed to ongoing debates within the lab.
