The Embassy of Brazil in Dublin recently hosted a special event celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Ireland. The occasion also marked the end of the first official visit by a Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Ireland, with Minister Mauro Vieira in attendance. The event featured remarks from Ambassador Flávio Macieira, Ireland’s Minister of State Séan Canney, and members of the Brazilian community, celebrating the strength and depth of the bilateral relationship. DeepLab directors Rosana Pinheiro-Machado and Marina Frid attended the event, reaffirming the lab’s commitment to fostering Brazil–Ireland cooperation through research, student mobility, and academic exchange.
During the ceremony, Caio Benicio, a former delivery worker in Dublin, was awarded the insignia of the Order of Rio Branco—an honorific order granted for distinguished service to the Brazilian state. He was recognised for his courageous intervention in 2023, when he stopped a man attacking children and a care assistant outside a Dublin school.
